How did you use Evernote and the Evernote Web Clipper to support your work in this course?
Originally when we were introduced to Evernote, I was skeptical about how useful it would be or how much I would use it. I was never in a class where students were allowed to bring their computers to class and are encouraged to use technology in class to enhance their learning experience. Once we downloaded Evernote and were taught how to use it, I tried using it throughout the course as much as I can, but overall, I have used Evernote in the most basic way. I typically clipped every article that was given for class and the articles we referred to throughout our discussions. I would try to keep a record of our class discussions by typing a new note for each class period. The most useful part of using Evernote was for the individual research for our group project of issues around reform. I used Evernote to clip the articles I was using for my research to keep track of them and keep things organized. Overall, Evernote was more helpful than I originally thought it would be.
What other uses for your PKB did you develop as you got more comfortable with Evernote?
As I got more comfortable with Evernote, I began using the program for other classes. Mostly, I used it for my WRT 106 class and my GCH 101 class. Both of these classes were heavily writing based and forced me to do a lot of research. I used Evernote by clipping the articles I thought would be useful for the project I was working on, whether it was a research paper or an investigative report. I found Evernote useful in keeping track of these articles because I would go through so many and clip them just incase I thought I could use them later on. Every article I clipped, I would tag. The tagging tool makes finding articles very easy because I could type in exactly what I was looking for and find results that matched. In addition to using Evernote for my classes, I recently started using Evernote to clip articles I’m interested in. On my iPhone, I have an app called Trusper. Trusper is a tip app that gives you helpful tips about things like cooking, hair styling, or do it yourself projects. Once I downloaded Evernote as an app on my phone, I noticed that I could start clipping the articles that I read on Trusper to Evernote. I’m just playing around with that now, but so far, I think it’s really useful; now I won’t forget the helpful cooking tips and recipes I come across.
How do you think that viewing your notes as a lasting resource might affect how you participate in future courses?
I think it will be advantageous to have my notes not only from this class, but also from the other classes I am using Evernote for. Having my notes from previous classes will be helpful in the future. Although I am not an education major, having the notes from this class can be helpful in life. I know more about the problems regarding schools and the different options students have between being in public school, private school, or a charter school. These notes may help me decide what it best for my family when I’m older. In addition, many subject matters overlap with content and I think it could be beneficial to have these resources readily available if I need to look back to jog my memory about an article I read or a project that I completed. It is always beneficial to have a large personal knowledge base because society and technology are advancing. In order to be successful in today’s competitive job market, employers will be looking for someone with an extra edge and Evernote may help me increase my PKB for that extra something employers are looking for.
